Guess how many trick-or-treaters I had last night!
By Betsy Richter | 6:28 pmI was smart this year.
I bought a huge bag of candy at Costco on October 3rd – and then left it in the trunk, safe from the prying fingers of my two children.
I bought the good stuff, too.
But I kinda sorta went overboard a bit. See, even though I knew that we don’t get many kids on our street (which has two big apartment complexes towering over two little bitty duplexes), I usually let my kids (and our guests) trade back into the bowl when they get back. So there were Reese’s for my son, and KitKat’s for the girl.
Our friends from the west side of town (the part with no sidewalks and cars that barrel down their street at 40 mph) always come over to our house on Halloween. See, we have flat, walkable sidewalks, and a neighborhood that teems with kids.
So I stop on the way home with pizza for all. The kids get cider to drink, while the adults have wine or ‘adult’ cider. Then my friend R takes the kids out while his wife and I stay behind to man the door and drink wine.
Since we hadn’t seen each other in a bit, there was a lot to cover. And we didn’t notice for a while that we’d had no doorbell action. So I checked – yep, doorbell works. Front porch light is on. Pumpkin’s still lit.
By the time the kids got back with their haul? We still hadn’t even torn a teeny tiny hole in that big plastic bag full of candy.
That’s right. We had a new world record – ZERO trick or treaters here on Halloween night.
But that’s okay – my co-workers all applauded my candy-buying skills today. After my son picked out all the Reese’s, that is…

We had zero this year, too. I was really disappointed. :/

We had zero as well… Well maybe the friends of our next store neighbors might have grabbed a couple pieces from the bowl we left outside.
We have a somewhat sparse neighborhood, so after an hour of trick or treating and no visitors, we jetted to the neighborhood my husband lived in in middleschool/highschool – I stayed with a friend who’s still in the neighborhood with my son, and hubby took the 2 girls around that neighborhood (Tristan didn’t get trick or treating last year – was upset he wasn’t going into other people’s houses…)
We found out my inlaws went with their other grandchildren in a small town near their house (they live out in the country) and we’re thinking we’ll go with them next year – the cousins all get along great anyway – I’ll just stay on the street with the stroller (he does like walks) and send his big sister up with a bag for him. (unless of course big sister gets to the age where she insists on trick or treating with her friends from school…)
