Who gives themselves Mother’s Day gifts, anyway? Sure, I got a nice handmade gift from Drama Mama; a Powerpoint card from The Mogul. I had a wonderful kid-free day (and managed to sleep for 11 hours straight – a true blessing for yours truly, insomnia victim.)
But I also managed to get a new blog up and running, and it marks a change in focus of sorts. I’ll still be writing stories about the kids here from time to time, but I’m also tackling the subject of single mom-dom over on the new blog: One Fish, Two Kids.
What’s with the fish reference, you wonder? Yep, it’s a play on that old saying “a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.”
But, um – isn’t there a guy in the picture? Don’t you like guys? (Or, as The Mogul put it – “there’s still a bike around, MoooooOOOOOm – Dad’s over here or we’re over there…!”)
Yes, I still like guys. But, no – there’s not really a guy in the picture any more – or at least, not in the same way. While The Pirate King and I are still friends and still see each other in ways that don’t intersect with the kids, we’ve decided (well, to be honest, I decided) to end the ‘boyfriend=girlfriend’ part of our relationship. And it brought up a lot of stuff I wanted to say about my relationship rules – my own beliefs about how parents need to think of their kids first and foremost with every single new romantic endeavor. And my firm rule that I never, ever expect my male friends to take on a paternal role with my kids. EVER. (Am not looking for a new daddy for them; their old dad does just fine, thank you very much…!)
So I’ll be talking about that on the new site, in a more serious vein (although I don’t think I’ll ever entirely lose my snarkiness.)
And Mr PK? As we thrashed through crafting out what our relationship will evolve into (god, that sounds pretentious, but it’s the best I can do right now), well – I did him a favor of sorts. I got him to start a blog of his own (and am acting as Blog Advisor, heh.) And as I expected, he’s been far more eloquent than I could ever hope to be about the changes we’ve been stepping gingerly through. Whether it’s this, or this or this – well, he just nails it every time. Drama Mama’s adventure with Guitar Hero? I write this. He writes that.
