Thanksgiving Muffins, Year Three

By Betsy Richter | 9:01 pm

Drama Mama and I made our batch of Thanksgiving Muffins last night, packaging them up in little bundles to give out to teachers and principals and after school caregivers and bus drivers and the like. By now (as I’d hoped), it’s a pretty solid tradition – although the actual muffins themselves have morphed from year to year.

And this year, DM decided to own the ritual.

She insisted that we needed to adapt our pumpkin-corn-chocolate chip muffin recipe instead of the orange cranberry versions we’ve made in the past. Since she has her mother’s cooking improv bug, she’s the one who started a mad scientist routine: subbing in applesauce for the pumpkin, adding dried fruits and making sure to include her special Secret Ingredient.)

She insisted that we needed to write an original poem, which got printed out and stapled to each bag early this morning:

A Thanksgiving so fine,
To share the wine,
And eat some turkey,
But here’s how we’re quirky.

We don’t give out bird,
But you’ll trust our word,
Instead, we bake muffins,
It’s not quite stuffing,
Why? Because we’re thankful for you!

She also insisted (yes, she’s a very headstrong child) that a fortune-cookie-like strip of paper needed to be included inside each bag:

Drama Mama and Betsy make Thanksgiving muffins each year to give out to the people we’re most thankful for. And the people we love. That includes you!

But because she was so intent on acknowledging other people through this ritual – well, I let her have her way. Most of the time, anyway.

I had to make one definitive stand, though: we would NOT use the word ‘lurkey’ in the poem. Even though it rhymed. Even though we nearly scrapped the entire project in a stalemated huff due to ‘creative differences.’ (And yes, I honestly tried to blackball the ‘muffins/stuffing’ couplet. But DM would not budge from her position that the poem ‘needed to rhyme’.)

Besides – quirky’s a pretty perfect description for the both of us, no?
