I love this time of year…
By Betsy Richter | 7:28 pmNo, it’s not just due to the fact that the kids are back in school – I’ve felt this way every September for years. And September signifies new starts to me – far more so than the the dropping of a ball in Times Square on a cold night in December ever does.
It starts, of course, with getting the kids ready for school – overhauling closets and dressers, getting rid of things that no longer fit (whether it’s a size, style, or attitude issue), stocking up with new (or new to us) clothing. We slip into new routines, while old favorites get dusted off and move back into the regular rotation (Drama Mama’s going through bags of apples as if she’s never ever had one before.) Days have a crisp tang to them in the morning, hints of woodsmoke tantalize at dusk, while it’s perfect sleeping weather at night.
Hot coffee appeals again (especially on early Saturday soccer mornings), while the thought of red wine starts sounding more interesting than frozen slushy drinks (though I’m hanging on to the last gasps of summer via my continuing love affair with mojitos…)
And it’s a month filled with optimism, with possibilities. This year, the new routines we create to keep chaos to a minimum will stick. We’ll get homework done on time. This year, we’ll win a soccer game, score a goal (or get an assist and/or commendation.) This year, the heating bills won’t kill my budget. I’ll remember to sign up for PTA, get the piles of paperwork in on time, and successfully duck most (but not all) of the volunteer commitments. I’ll keep the calendar up-to-date; we’ll keep our social obligations.
Even the most mundane tasks take on a larger purpose; their completion gives me satisfaction beyond measure. Either that or I lead a pathetic Stepford-ish life where creating a basket full of fully-stocked pre-bagged afterschool snacks turns into a freakish Goal to be Celebrated – you be the judge. But you should know that the basket contains cashews and whole wheat pretzels, while I have not one, not two, not three, but four kinds of fresh fruit available, so there!
Now, if you’ll excuse me – it’s time to ensure that Drama Mama hits her target bedtime of 8:30 on time…

The thing I love most about this time of year is that the air smells of blackberries, and almost anywhere in town is only a few minutes away from some neglected lot that’s been overrun by brambles and their attendant blackberries. Where else in this country do the weeds not only smell good, but produce fruit also?
