Not looking for love in all the wrong places
By Betsy Richter | 10:13 amI’m meeting a friend for a planned girls night out tonight. No, we’re not talking the limo/champagne/adult entertainment version of a GNO – we’re both clear that we’re not looking for any big champagne-worthy thrills, thank you very much. And we’re also not on the prowl – she’s married, I’m involved with someone (and also still married as well, come to think of it…) Instead, we want something low-key – a relaxed place to kick back a bit and catch up over a glass of wine or two. No frills, no thrills.
Since we want to stick to something in my neighborhood, I thought of the new local wine bar up the street, and turned to my trusty friend Google to see if I could find specific Happy Hour information on the place (yep, I’m always looking to pinch a few pennies here and there.) I clicked through the Citysearch listing (bleagh), dropped by FoodDude’s place to check out his review, and then stumbled over this snippet in a link to Willamette Week’s (our local alternative weekly) personals section FAQ:
Personals Parties: GAY & SINGLE? Wednesday, January 18th, 7-10pm at Pour Wine Bar
Uh…while I am hardly opposed to the search for love by whatever means possible, I’m just not up for the scrutiny today, to be honest. (Or, more accurately, the oh-too-predictable visible disdain and/or dismissal, given my obvious lack of attention to what I look like lately…!) And the potential romantic rejection by someone of my own gender just opens up new and unchartered vistas of rejection – rejection times two! – that my fragile ego just won’t handle well right now.
So since we’re not looking for love in all the wrong places? We’re now in search of another place to have our quiet glass of wine – a place where I won’t have to worry about today’s fashion faux pas, for starters. But not without this small pang of regret: damn, it might have made for a slightly thrilling evening (not to mention blog post) had we just shown up without knowing…!

Hope you found a less frantic place in which to meet. Glad you discovered the singles scene before you got there…

I hear the Egyptian Room is nice to newbies. And Tuesday night is stripper night!

I got roped into going to one of those things once. I asked a guy, “What happens later?” And the sonofabitch TOLD ME. I went so fast out the front door I left scorch marks.
