We may have our priorities…
By Betsy Richter | 4:04 pm…all out of whack when it comes to celebrating winter holidays around here, but I defy anyone to sniff disdainfully at the tradition we’re starting this year.
I just got off the phone with the ticket office at Oregon Ballet Theatre. Drama Mama and I now have a hot date to see Balanchine’s The Nutcracker. She will don her red velvet gown, will most likely insist on pulling out her white gloves (yes, she has white gloves, courtesy of my mother), and we will dine in splendor beforehand, I’m sure.
I’m betting it’ll add a whole new level of sophistication to our usual traditions: Santa Claus mugs; Christmas Adam; and, most tellingly, hot nights spent with this guy.
And since 25% of the cost goes directly to her school? I’m not too upset about the untested experiment we’re embarking on. DM and ballet-going, that is – I already know she’s all over the red velvet, white gloves and fine dining aspects of the evening’s entertainment!

I don’t think it’s possible to miss with the Balanchine Nutcracker. It’s absolutely magical. I’ll bet DM will love it.

I haven’t seen the Nutcracker since I danced in it many years ago. I thought about taking my daughter to it this year, but I just couldn’t bring myself to.
I hope you guys have a wonderful time. It is a beautiful, magical ballet!

Oh, you guys will have a wonderful time. The last time I went was when Canfield was still director, so I’m sure this one will be even better. Can’t miss with a Balanchine choreography!
